The city of Surabaya is a major transportation gateway to the East Java region of Indonesia. Not only is the city well-connected to the rest of the island through the airways, it also has connections by land and by sea, making getting to Surabaya an easy task. Here we discuss the ways a traveler can get to the city and details pertinent to each method.

As expected, the fastest way to get to Surabaya is by air through the Juanda International Airport. The Juanda International Airport is the second busiest airport in Indonesia. In 2006 the airport added a new terminal, allowing international and domestic flights to arrive and depart from the same building.

The city is served by most of the country’s domestic airlines with hourly flights to and from Jakarta and less frequent flights to other cities of Indonesia. Getting to Surabaya by air direct from other countries is limited in options, however, as not too many airlines serve Surabaya city. Singapore’s Silk Air is the only international airline that has direct flights to and from Surabaya and another country, which would be Singapore.

From other countries, it will be easier to fly to Jakarta first before heading to Surabaya. When you get to such cities, you can take a domestic flight to take you to Surabaya. Aircraft carriers include Adam Air, Batavia Air, Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, Mandala Airlines, Merpati Airlines and Pelita Air.

Another way to get to the city is by bus. There are buses that have direct routes to Surabaya from the different major cities in the Central and East Java region. Most of these buses operate from the main Surabaya bus terminal. Booking can be made directly at the bus terminal or you can buy your tickets from travel agencies from the city center as well. Know that the Purabaya bus terminal only caters to intercity buses, which means that intercity buses are prohibited to routes around the city. You will have to catch another ride to get to the city center of Surabaya.

Getting to Surabaya by land is also possible by taking the train. It takes at least nine hours to get to Surabaya from Jakarta by train. Surabaya actually has two main stations: one is the Surabaya Gubeng and the other is Surabaya Pasar Turi. Those coming from the northern route usually arrive at the Pasar Turi Station while those who took the southern route arrive at the Gubeng train station. There are first class and second class seats for such intercity journeys.

Surabaya is also a major sea port of the country that caters to ships headed to other islands. Getting to Surabaya by sea is made easy by Pelni Ships, which have the most number of journeys to and from Makassar, Pontianak and Banjarmasin. All ships leave from the Tanjung Perak harbor of Surabaya.

As is made clear by this, getting to Surabaya offers a number of options either by air, land or sea. Depending on which method is most convenient and most appropriate for you, you can easily pick out which transport will take you to the city of Surabaya.
