The entire Indonesian archipelago has a tropical climate with seasons based on its monsoons. Its weather is then determined by factors such as the movement of air, temperatures and humidity. The dry season of Surabaya is exactly what it claims, a hot climate with minimal rains. Such hot climates fall between the months of May and September with the driest months during July and August.

But if at times you find the weather too oppressive and humid especially during the midday sun, simply take a breather and head to the nearest air-conditioned restaurant you see.

Visiting during the wet season of Surabaya means you should expect sudden downpours and tropical storms. Nevertheless, there are days when the wet season is blessed with sunshine all day. However, there are some days when the city is not too lucky with good weather with instances of non-stop rain that go on for days. During the wet season, there is no definite time of the day where rains occur, which is why tourists should always be ready in case a sudden downpour. December and January are the city’s wettest months with precipitation levels that reach up to 24 inches. Temperatures still remain high, which means humidity is at its highest at 75%. This may cause a rather sticky and uncomfortable feeling especially when out and about the city all day. Although this may not be your picture of a vacation, tourist attractions and hotel accommodations drastically lower their prices during the lean season of the wet months. This will then lead visitors to a hefty amount of savings. Just make sure you don’t mind getting wet during your travel.

Now despite having two distinct monsoon seasons, Surabaya has constantly high temperatures all year round. This is a result of its close proximity to the Earth’s equator with the Java Island lying just about seven degrees south of the central line. Temperatures remain constantly high with only a couple of degrees variation from month to month. The hottest temperatures are experienced by the coastal areas with slightly lower temperatures towards the interior.

This constant climate gives the city its fairly predictable weather conditions, making packing for Surabaya not a problem. The main difference between the Surabaya seasons is the amount of rain. Nevertheless, the weather in Surabaya should not stop anyone from exploring the great outdoors of this wonderful capital city of the East Java region.
